Good point on language in today’s NYT. Consider this sentence:
I never said she stole my money.
It can have seven very different meanings — depending on which word is stressed. (If you need that spelled out, read on.)
1. I never said she stole my money.
….It was Tommy who said it.
2. I never said she stole my money.
….I said a few things, but not that.
3. I never said she stole my money.
….Maybe I implied it. But I didn’t say it.
4. I never said she stole my money.
….I said “That bunch stole it.”
5. I never said she stole my money.
….I said she borrowed it and didn’t pay it back.
6. I never said she stole my money.
….It was the company’s money she stole.
7. I never said she stole my money.
….Yeah, she took a lot. But I kept my dough.
